Champagny ice tower: how to plan a session
The ice tower is an artificial climbing structure at Le Bois in Champagny-le-Haut. Beginners should book a supervised initiation; autonomous access is for equipped, insured climbers who already know lead climbing and belaying.

Champagny’s ice tower brings ice climbing to the Le Bois area of Champagny-le-Haut. The official general listing describes a 22 m artificial structure with several difficulty levels. Seeing it, taking an initiation and climbing independently are three different plans.
Choose the appropriate access
| Your experience | Suitable next step |
|---|---|
| Curious spectator | Ask the tourist office about current public viewing and any event arrangements |
| First ice-climbing session | Find a supervised initiation with confirmed date, eligibility and equipment |
| Experienced autonomous climber | Read the independent-access conditions and confirm current operation |
A beginner-friendly section of the structure does not mean beginners can buy autonomous access. Ask a qualified provider to confirm the appropriate supervised format, especially for children.
Independent climbing requirements
The autonomous-climber listing requires lead-climbing and belaying competence, individual insurance, personal equipment and payment of the access fee. It also says ice screws are prohibited on the structure. Read the full operator rules before reserving or travelling.
This page does not teach climbing or equipment use. If those requirements are unfamiliar, use an instructed session rather than treating independent entry as an introduction.
Confirm status before travelling up
Ice condition controls access. Reopen the relevant official listing and confirm with the operator or tourist office for your date; seasonal hours alone do not establish that the tower is available. Events or maintenance may also affect the session you want.
For a supervised booking, confirm the meeting point, time, minimum age, footwear and equipment supplied. Do not assume that the independent-climber tariff includes an instructor or rental kit.
Organise the valley visit
The tower is in the upper valley, not at the village gondola. Check winter road access and your return transport. Combine it with another Le Bois visit only when opening times align. For mobility requirements, describe your exact needs to the operator: reaching a viewing position and taking part in climbing require separate access checks.
