Via ferrata in Champagny: Plan du Bouc and Grosses Pierres
Champagny has the Plan du Bouc routes above the upper valley and Les Grosses Pierres above the village. Plan du Bouc has PD/AD options and an exposed return; Grosses Pierres is ED, extremely difficult, for experienced climbers. Newcomers should arrange a qualified guide and confirm the selected route is open.

Choose a via ferrata by its grade, exposure and return, rather than by how close it looks to the road. Champagny’s two named sites offer very different experiences, and neither should be treated as an ordinary walking path.
Compare the sites
| Site | Official description | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Plan du Bouc | Options in the PD/AD range above Champagny-le-Haut | Approach and descent walking, with an exposed passage on the return |
| Les Grosses Pierres | Approximately 200 m, ED/extremely difficult, above the village | Intended for experienced climbers; length understates the physical demand |
The Plan du Bouc listing and its downloadable topo should be read together. The topo distinguishes route variants; ask which one your guide proposes before agreeing the outing.
Arrange the right guided day
If you are new to via ferrata, book qualified supervision. Explain your climbing experience, comfort with heights, any medical or mobility limitations, and the ages and sizes of participants. Ask the guide to confirm the actual route, meeting place, approach, return and total time commitment.
For children, get route-specific advice from the professional rather than relying on a generic age label. Equipment must fit the person and the activity. Ask whether the booking includes suitable helmet, harness and via ferrata lanyard, or whether rental must be arranged separately.
Seasonal restrictions and conditions
Plan du Bouc’s official listing limits use to the summer/autumn season and identifies the rest of the year as a closure for wintering wildlife. Its published window is not confirmation of inspection or safe weather for your day. Check with the tourist office or guide before setting out.
Rain, remaining snow and forecast storms can change the plan. Agree a decision with your guide; a free-access listing does not provide supervision or guarantee usable equipment on the route.
Add the approach and return
Locate the correct parking and route entrance before leaving. Plan du Bouc is associated with the road to Champagny-le-Haut; Grosses Pierres is a separate site above the village. Include the walk back in your day’s effort and leave time for it before another booking.
For a walking alternative, compare ordinary hiking routes. The summer guide can help you rearrange the day if conditions rule out the ferrata.
Common questions
Which Champagny via ferrata is suitable to discuss for a first guided outing?
Discuss Plan du Bouc with a qualified guide. It offers lower grades than Grosses Pierres, but includes approach walking and an exposed return. Suitability depends on the participant, conditions and the exact route.
Is Grosses Pierres a beginners’ via ferrata?
No. The official listing grades the 200 m route ED, extremely difficult, and identifies experienced climbers as its audience. Short length does not mean low difficulty.
Can I use Plan du Bouc in winter or spring?
The official listing gives a June–October season and prohibits use during the rest of the year to protect wintering wildlife. Confirm the current closure and inspection status with the tourist office before travelling.
