Snowy path toward Champagny-le-Haut with view back to Champagny-en-Vanoise in winter

Snowshoeing around Champagny-le-Haut

Snowshoeing in Champagny includes upper-valley routes and lift-accessed terrain. Teppes starts at Le Bois; La Rossa uses the gondola and needs pedestrian lift access. Choose by conditions, difficulty and transport.

Champagny snowshoeing is not limited to the Nordic valley. Choose between a marked route in Champagny-le-Haut, a mountain outing reached by gondola, or a guided session with its own meeting point.

Two official routes to compare

Route Official planning figures Main access decision
Teppes Easy, 1.6 km out-and-back, 100 m ascent, about 1 hour Starts at the Nordic chalet in Le Bois, Champagny-le-Haut
La Rossa Moderate, about 2.2 km out-and-back, 151 m ascent, about 1½ hours Reached by Champagny gondola with a pedestrian ticket

These are published route-card figures, not guaranteed walking times. Both routes are described as ungroomed and depend on snow and weather. Open the full card and current route map before travelling.

La Rossa needs a mountain-day plan

The official route runs between La Rossa and Roc des Blanchets. Its notice advises against going after heavy snowfall or in fog, recommends poles and says not to walk on alpine ski pistes. Follow the designated route and local signs.

Check the gondola’s pedestrian ticket, operating status and last descent before ascending. Keep time for the outward walk, breaks and the return; an untimed lift ticket does not remove the last-descent constraint.

Guided outings and equipment

ESF Champagny’s snowshoe offer gives a weekly programme depending on snow conditions. Its published daytime offer meets at the gondola summit and says snowshoes are not supplied. Check the booked outing rather than assuming every guided walk starts in Le Bois.

Arrange snowshoes suitable for your weight and footwear, plus poles if required. Wear warm walking boots, carry layers, water and food, and ask about children’s suitability before reserving.

Decide again on the morning

Read the mountain forecast, route notices and any applicable avalanche bulletin. If conditions do not match your experience, take local professional advice or change the plan. A summer hiking line, a visible set of footprints or open Nordic tracks does not establish that a snowshoe itinerary is suitable that day.
